1995 – What a year! The Prodigy brought us Jilted Generation and Anto O’Brien hit the decks for the first time.
Deciding he wanted to roll with the big boys, Steven (Man in a Room) Connolly, Frank Kearney and Alan Walsh, Anto was let loose on a set of 1210s for his Djing debut. It wasn’t pretty folks, it wasn’t pretty at all!! But Steven and Alan (who had formed C-Quence) reckoned he wasn’t a total lost cause and, along with Frank, encouraged him to keep the head down, the chin up and keep at them there decks. So, undeterred, he did what every good DJ before him has done. Holed himself up in the garden shed, drank vat loads of tea, kept Johnny Blue in business. and got his s*it together, eventually persuading the good people of NRG88FM to give him a slot on Sundays for a marathon 12-6 session. He kept this up for a year.
When things went the shape of the pear at NRG, Anto sought new pastures and cramped little studios to broadcast from, managing to persuade Ronan O to give him another Sunday slot, this time on Nova 94.6FM where he played for six years. It was at Nova that Anto gained a sizeable following of future 12tenners who regularly tuned in for his sublime selection of quality house beats.
Club wise, Anto is the DJ equivalent of a foxrock convent girl, i.e. he gets around!! You name the club Anto has played there, including The Venue – in Galway, Switch/The Hub, The Kitchen, The POD, Club mono, A.K.A. Bar, The Vaults and Traffic. He has held residencies at some of Dublin’s most influential club nights from El Azote at Spi Bar with 515’s Dave Salacious, Perfection DJs with Frank S at The Life bar to the infamous 12ten at the Legal Eagle (which he kicked off after an initial business meeting with Al Keegan and Rob Hawk in eh… clubber’s mecca Cavan!). The 12ten experience spanned eighteen months, and was typified by heaving dancefloors and sheer madness, where many friendships were forged, minds were lost and Anto’s star really began to shine. These days Anto can be found lashing out the good the great and the goddamn filthy of all things house every Saturday from 5:00pm till 7pm on internet radio powerfm.org , So if you’re seriously strung out for a sonic fix of the finest tunage tune into one of the shows. Satisfaction guaranteed.
