Countersunk presents: “NUTS”

Saturday 20th August sees our first event taking place from 8pm until 1am in Block-T Gallery and Studios, Haymarket Sq, Smithfield, Dublin. Six acts of electronic music will share the stage with each act playing two different sets over the course of the night. Our aim is to create an evolving stage presence and avoid the usual hierarchical gig setup. The music will be accompanied by a live multi projector 3D visual installation. There is no bar so feel free to bring your own poison.

Angkorwa

Donnacha Costello

Donnacha Costello produces some of the sweetest morning techno-trance you’ll ever hear. His epic Colors series on his own label Minimise, ten records recorded live on analog gear without a computer, is a milestone in the history of techno. The Colors sound is pure hypnosis, the sound of real trance. Donnacha last year revamped his set-up, bought a computer, and started making music as infectious and clever as his previous music was deep. His massive hit “That’s Great, Start Over” was played out by Luciano and Richie Hawtin in their almost every one of their sets last year, and was one of the biggest minimal tracks of the year.

T-woc

T-woc makes bass-heavy electronic dub ready-made for moving your hips. His live sets employ a swaggering rhythm pushing the sound system with plenty of intricate phrases to keep the brain in sync with the body. He currently runs the physical releases at the Alphabet Set, selects & promotes reggae music in the monthly Roots Corner session, spins wacked out vinyl for the B-Music guys in the Workmans Club and shortly is starting a new radio show on Power FM. Production wise he has an EP on Belfast label Rudimentary forthcoming and is working on a sequel to the Delayed Responses series on Alphabet Set.

SHEPHERD

Founder of Umbrelladelika records, Shepherd has released his first EP on acroplane recordings in 2009. His style has been compared to the sinister breakbeat sound of Scorn or Push Button Objects but hidden beneath his abstract instrumental hip hop creations lies a murky swamp of intriguing squelchy synth lines and heavy basses. Shepherd recently released a an EP on acroplane and a track on the flip of baconhead’s Novahawk single (UBD004), has a collaboration going on with Japanese rappers Phoebus and is currently working on new material, as one half of SPONGEMAGNET.

SUNKEN FOAL

After releasing his critically acclaimed album “Fallen Arches” and EP “Fermented Condiments” on Planet-Mu records, Dunk Murphy has continued to skim along the division between his obsession with gnarly electronic sound and his childhood love of all things stringy and plucked. Commissioned to record a session for Mary Anne Hobbs’ now defunct ‘Experimental’ show on BBC Radio 1, Dunk started to integrate more compositional elements, instruments and lyrics to pursue his arcane vision of what the “song” means to him. In January 2011, Sunken Foal released the ‘Mother of God’ EP on Acroplane employing multi layered analogue synths revealing a tough, uncompromising and often psychedelic sonic production. His live sets lately have comprised of a selection from the 50+ beat driven two minute tracks he has completed throughout the year and are set for release very soon.

PLATINUM RAY

Pauly Martin aka Platinum Ray aka Platters, brings a playful, party style of mixing to his DJ sets by mixing vinyl records with different flavours of dance and electronic sounds. He is never afraid to get abstract and wonky with his selections, although it is his intuitive ability to play classic records amongst the underground sounds that gets people dancing. As Platinum Ray says, “When I play records I try to find ways of putting together music which is at once spontaneous and unexpected but also rewarding. I don’t think of electronic music as being futuristic or elitist, I think of it as being celebratory. I am interested in making people dance to music which is sometimes challenging, but always enjoyable.” Starting out on pirate radio in the Dublin suburb of Tallaght, he has continued to perform for promoters such as U-Mack and Front End Synthetics for over 10 years. He can currently be heard fortnightly on Sunday evenings on Power FM
