Mark O’Sullivan – Fragments From A Long Country

Mark O’Sullivan needs little introduction. As a DJ, Remixer, Producer and Label boss, O’Sullivan has been putting out seminal records since the mid 90s – releasing on labels such as: Output, Pickadoll, Audiomatique, Plastic City, Brique Rouge, Svek, Ork Rec, Morris Audio and finally finding a groove with Ireland’s Nice & Nasty.
Either as DK7 on the mighty Output label with Jesper Dahlback; as one half of Mark and John with John Dahlback (Pickadoll, Audiomatique); or as the Mighty Quark (remixing Leftfield no less), Mark O’Sullivan traverses the evolution of dance music – Techno, Minimal, Acid House, Dub, Progressive House, Ambient and even indie rock have all bleeped on the O’Sullivan Radar screen.
As a DJ or a live artist Marks music has brought him around the world from Tokyo to Montreal, headline slots at Roskilde and Benicassim Summer festivals plus classic electronic festivals such as 10 days off, DEAF and Sonar.
Mark’s Own Words:
Fragments was written, mixed and produced in the 3 weeks after I found out that I was going to be a father.Happy and knowing that nothing was ever going to be the same my feelings and thoughts were influenced by a sense of nostalgia and pragamtism.
Though on the surface it may feel like that “Fragments From A Long Country” is very much formed by the techno and electronic spirit there are many other themes operating under the surface that provide a concrete foundation for the album as a whole. A rekindled interest in the Irish language brought to my mind a brilliant poem by Máirtín Ó Díreáin called “Stoite”(uprooted ) giving the essence of sense of place and identity a strong influence on the mood.
The albums overall sound was definitely influenced by the timing of its conception, an unsettling time period that lies somewhere between Swedish winter and spring ,where two seasons ebb and flow in daily combat ,where light will prove victorious and will eventually return to the “Long Country”.

Mark O’Sullivan – Fragments from a Long Country
(ROB WARNER REVIEW)
Swede Mark O’Sullivan and Irish label Nice & Nasty have teamed up and hit gold here. It’s the album tech-heads should be marking on their calendar to buy on release. From the get go – the jammy ‘She Stood There Laughing’ you know this is going to be a good listen and by track two the utterly brilliant ‘Come Over’ it’s a done deal. Half Joris Voorn and half mid-90s Detroit-esque is the vibe of the album which spans from the deepest spacey numbers to peak time dance floor monsters. The balance is the noticeable thing here – from the manic ‘Take You Tripping’ to key-led Underground Resistance type reprise tracks like ‘Within You’ the quality holds up right through, something which can’t be said of most electronic LPs put out these days. To preview the release a remix EP is out with a very solid remixes of album tracks by Psycatron aka Paul Hamil, Jamie Behan and Eamonn Doyle. (Out 21 July on iTunes and 14 Aug elsewhere).
Great stuff. Eamon Doyle remix and Jamie Behan remix are both very solid, I really like both of them. Nice and atmospheric – Kazuumi Ishi and Itokim
Jamie Behan Remix is very emotional! I love it!
